UNIX for the Mainframer - Errata

This page contains corrections and updates to my book, UNIX for the Mainframer. If you have any additions, suggestions, corrections, or updates for my book, please email them to me!

If you see a correction here that already been applied to your copy, please do not tell me about it. As the various problems are identified, they are applied to the next printing. As a result, there are more erratta listed here than may apply to your book.

You can decode the printing of your book by looking at the series of numbers near the bottom of the Copyright page that look something like:

     10  9  8  7  6  5  4  3  2  1

The lowest number that you see is the printing. The very first printing had all the numbers shown. Some publishers also include the year so you can tell both which printing and the year the printing occurred.

• Figure 1.4: Stratus is misspelled.
• Figure 5.4: many errors. It looks like one of the descriptions was messed up causing the code and description to be mismatched.
• Figure 5.8a, page 217: ltail should be tail
• Appendix B: Missing back-quotes in the GDG code example, should be:

        export abc=`gdg_*.ksh dsname`
  

• Appendix B: gdg_use.ksh script: One reader suggested that the "GDG all" code needs needs a pipe to sort "sort -r" to ensure that the GDG access is forced to be youngest-to-oldest in the GDG group. I know I researched this when writing the script - normal "ls" should get oldest-to-newest (lowest GDG number to highest, alphabetical order) and I believe that is the correct way.
